History

1964: St. Michael’s Montessori opens as a parent cooperative in the Parish House of St. Michael’s Church, sharing space with West Side Montessori School

1965: Mario Montessori, son of Maria Montessori, visits the school

1976: West Side Montessori School moves to its own building on West 92nd Street

1996: School moves to West 85th Street, becomes Metropolitan Montessori

1998: First accreditation review by New York State Association of Independent Schools

2005: Metropolitan Montessori joins the Black Rock Forest consortium

2009: MMS is reaccredited by New York State Assocation of Independent Schools and accredited by the American Montessori Society

2009: Metropolitan Montessori buys building at 325 West 85th

2011: Brenda Mizel becomes 10th head of school

2011: Metropolitan Montessori buys building at 315 West 85th

2014: Metropolitan Montessori celebrates 50th year
