MMS appoints new admissions director
Blair Bizzell-Hatcher has joined the Metropolitan Montessori School Admissions Office as director, beginning July 1.
She comes to MMS from the Ethical Culture School, where she has worked since 2005 as a classroom teacher teaching ethics, an admissions associate and diversity coordinator. She also has worked as a special education teacher in public and charter elementary schools.
Blair grew up in New York City, attending independent and public schools. Her undergraduate and graduate education concentrated on early childhood and elementary special education. She has two daughters who attend independent schools in the city.
She became involved in admissions through her role as diversity coordinator, interviewing prospective families, observing child visits, and supporting outreach and retention efforts. She quickly realized how much she enjoyed working with families and children as they considered what schools may be the right fit for them. Blair’s favorite component of her admissions work was the relationships she nurtured with students and parents over the years, from the genesis of the family’s first experience during the admissions process, all the way through. “The students I met during my first admissions season are going to 9th grade in September. I had the opportunity to have authentic relationships with them, because I was the first face they saw during their visit and then at some point, I got to be their ethics teacher. How exciting is that!”
As diversity coordinator at Ethical Culture, Blair worked as a liaison between families, faculty and the administration around issues of diversity and multiculturalism. She implemented programming and assisted with curriculum planning to make sure that “multiple perspectives” were well represented. Blair also facilitated workshops for students and faculty and worked very closely with the parents’ multi-cultural committee in the planning of their activities, meeting agendas/topics, racial affinity groups and book discussions.
“I’m thrilled about coming to MMS in my new role” she said. “The school has an excellent reputation as a warm and welcoming community. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and engaging in the rich culture of MMS!”
