Upper Elementary (grades 4 through 6) provides challenging academic content, and emphasizes consistent, responsible study habits. Academic studies are calibrated to the ages and abilities of the children, enabling them to extend their knowledge once essential skills have been mastered.
The school’s small size is an advantage for helping each child to develop the ability to interpret information, formulate questions, and express ideas. To help students prepare for the next stage in their education, organizational skills are stressed, including listening to directions, tracking and prioritizing multiple assignments, managing time, taking notes, writing short answers and essays, and editing, correcting and evaluating one’s work.
Each winter, Upper Elementary students present a musical such as Seussical, Honk!, Smike, and Dear Edwina. The students memorize, rehearse, and develop the music and scenery for an intensive six-week period, culminating in four performances for the school community.
As Upper Elementary students begin to take their place in the world, they develop as involved citizens in their community. Students study world religions, raise money for UNICEF, collect supplies and clothing for The Chauntra School of Tibetan refugees in India, and donate food to neighborhood food drives. Upper Elementary students also perform community service within the school as senior partners with Primary classrooms.
